Laser Vision Correction Methods and Benefits

Below, you'll find extensive information on leading laser vision correction articles and products to help you on your way to success.

When people mention laser vision correction, they're usually talking about LASIK. LASIK is a laser-assisted procedure that improves the patient's eyesight by reshaping the surface of the cornea. However, LASIK is not the only type of laser vision correction available.

Photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, is a technique very similar to LASIK. The difference is that, with LASIK laser vision correction, a hinged flap is cut into the patient's cornea with either a tiny blade or a laser. The flap is folded back during the surgery and replaced afterward to act as its own bandage. During a PRK procedure, this flap is removed entirely and replaced with a bandage contact lens.

Touch-free laser thermal keratoplasty, or LTK, uses a holmium laser to resize the cornea by shrinking its collagen supply. Conductive keratoplasty, or CK, achieves the same effect through the use of radio waves. These procedures can minimize the reading vision loss that comes naturally with age.

There are even different varieties of LASIK itself. Regular LASIK uses a very small blade to create an incision in the outermost layer of the patient's eye. The cornea beneath is then resculpted with a precise excimer laser.

Bladeless laser eye surgery, or IntraLase, uses the same technique; instead of a blade, an infrared laser is used to cut a hinged flap in the patient's cornea. Another variation is custom wavefront LASIK, which delivers highly individualized results by mapping the patient's cornea and detecting problem areas.

Why would someone choose laser vision correction over simple glasses or contacts? Different patients undergo the procedure for various reasons. Some do it because they don't feel attractive when they wear glasses. Others simple can't tolerate the amount of work required to keep contact lenses in good shape. Still others lead active lifestyles that make glasses and contact lenses inconvenient.

The results of laser vision correction are dramatic and almost instantaneous. It can take up to six months for the patient's final vision to be attained, but most patients see a noticeable improvement the day after surgery. These fast results from a one-time procedure make laser vision correction an attractive alternative to corrective eyewear.

Some people find new freedom after undergoing laser vision correction. Careers that depend on good eyesight might have been unavailable to them before. After the procedure, they can choose to pursue a career as a pilot, police officer, or any other position that disallows glasses and contact lenses. Even surgeons and others who need clear, detailed vision find that their job performance improves following laser vision correction. And for those who dread dealing with slipping eyeglasses and irritating contacts, daily activities such as driving become less of a chore and more of an enjoyment.

Laser eye surgery isn't right for everyone. Some medical conditions can make you an unsuitable candidate for laser vision correction. If you have concerns, or if you just want to know if LASIK is right for you, talk to your eye doctor. They will be able to counsel you about the procedure and all available alternatives. If they don't perform laser vision correction themselves, you can ask them to recommend a good surgeon who does.
